WORLD Retreats

WORLD holds semi-annual retreats for HIV+ women in the Spring and Fall. WORLD has held 29 retreats in 15 years. The first WORLD retreat was held in 1991 at the Marin Headlands. Each 3-day retreat provides up to 40 women with a holistic experience that includes treatment education workshops, stress management, art activities, support groups, safer sex information, and discussions on topics including disclosure and stigma.

There is also a fun-filled talent/no talent show that is often a retreat highlight. First-timers at the WORLD's retreats have found it empowering to meet and network with other WORLD women. In many cases WORLD retreats are the first time they have been with other HIV+ women. Participants have come from California (most), Texas, Alaska, Florida, New York, New Mexico, Washington, Wisconsin, Missouri, North Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, Oregon, Nevada, Tennessee, Canada, Israel and Africa. It is quite common for women to leave a WORLD retreat feeling rested, inspired and having a larger social support network to deal with their HIV and challenges of everyday life.

WORLD retreats are held at a location within 2 hours of Oakland. The cost of the retreat covers all meals and lodging. The fee for first time attendees is $40 and for returnees it is $100. WORLD is able to offset the cost of the program to women through fundraising. We encourage women to request sponsorship from their health care provider, friends or family if they are unable to pay the fee with their own resources.
