Hello my name is Rahni Johnson and I am 15 years old interning with WORLD this summer. I have been getting to know some of the employees here, and I want to introduce you to some of the wonderful WORLD employees. Introducing Nena Bridges and Felicia Greenly:

Nena Bridges

How did you get involved with WORLD?

I came here in 1998 to work as a volunteer and a year passed and they hired me to be a full time employee.

How long have you been working at WORLD?

I have been an employee at WORLD for 11 years.

What is your role/title here?

I am the receptionist, I send newsletters out to 89 national and international countries, I open all mail, and I do the banking as well as telephone support.

What is the most satisfying thing you have experienced at your job?

Seeing all of the women here happy really fills my heart with joy.

What inspires you to come to work everyday?

My inspiration for coming to work is knowing that I will always put a smile on someone’s face.

Share something funny or humorous that happens around here.

The funniest thing around here is when we all sit at the table and have lunch and talk about things that go on in our lives.

Felicia Greenly

How did you become apart of the WORLD family?

I was first a client of WORLD and was for about a year, then i became a member here at WORLD.

How long have you been with WORLD?

I have been with WORLD for about 2 years.

What is your role/title here?

I am a Peer Advocate, I give emotional and practical support to the women, i also work with infected and uninfected families.

To you, what is the best part of your job?

To me the best part of my job is giving back to people what WORLD gave to me when i was a client, and that is knowing that you are not alone with the virus that we live with.

What inspires you to come to work everyday?

My inspiration for coming to work is knowing that i can call someone and put a smile on their face.

Share something humorous that happens around the WORLD office area.

Something humorous that happpens around the office is when Sharon Gambles is walking around saying jokes and singing her songs. She puts a smile on everyones face that can hear her.

As we all celebrate the newly-released National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS), several questions remain about how the Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP) and other Federal Agencies should implement it. The new strategy provides a good basic framework, but lacks specific direction on many important issues facing women.

If we want them to put women-specific plans in place, we need to make sure that they know about the experiences of women living with HIV. If we want them to do something specific about women and discrimination, we have to show them something specific about women and discrimination!

With this in mind, the National WARC E-Forum has been set up to provide a space for the voices of women living with HIV to be heard:

What are your experiences with programs or policies related to housing, health care, employment?

Have you ever faced judgment or discrimination in connection with your choices around your sex life or pregnancy?

Have your received the information you need to make informed decisions about HIV testing and treatment? Been pressured about when and how you get tested for HIV?

There are two ways to participate:

1) Complete the online survey about your experiences — you’ll see the link to it when you register for the forum
2) Blog your comments, suggestions about the topics of the week, or whatever you feel is important to say about the needs of women with HIV or your experiences with discrimination in getting those needs met.

GO ALL THE WAY AND DO BOTH: COMPLETE THE SURVEY, AND ADD YOUR COMMENTS TO THE LIVE E-FORUM TODAY, TOMORROW, ANY AND EVERY DAY UNTIL JULY 31, 2101!

JUST GO TO THE FORUM, REGISTER, AND GET STARTED!

The lead Federal Agencies responsible for implementing the NHAS (The Department of Housing and Urban Development, Social Security Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Labor, Department of Justice and The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) must create action plans within the next 150 days. Now is the time for women living with HIV to speak up to make sure that states and the federal government do something real to protect HIV-positive women’s rights.

The WARC E-Forum Schedule and Suggested Discussion Topics are listed below. Although, as you’ll see, we are getting conversations started on different topics each week, you can weigh in on ANYTHING that you think is important about your experience as a woman affected by HIV, or as an advocate for women affected by HIV, from now until July 31st.

Starting July 12th: Direct Service Interactions and Experiences

- How have you/HIV positive women been treated in various direct services areas, such as housing, health care, and employment? What about care or services related to your sex life, pregnancy, having children?

Starting July 19th: Local and Regional Policies

- What experiences have you had with policies that affect women with HIV in the town or state where you live? Do you have ideas about ways to improve these policies?

Starting July 26th: International Human Rights and National Policy Strategies

- How should the rights of women be a concrete part of national plans to end HIV? What should federal agencies and officials do to make women’s human rights a specific part of their plans to fight HIV?

Register now and become a part of the national conversation. The real-life experiences of HIV positive women, their loved ones and their advocates can make a real difference in whether the National HIV/AIDS Strategy produces concrete action for women.

To join the forum today — register here, and feel free to complete a survey about your experience, post a comment or both!

The WARC E-Forum is hosted by the Center for HIV Law and Policy (CHLP), and co-facilitated by the American Bar Association Center for Human Rights, American Bar Association AIDS Coordinating Committee, WORLD/Positive Women’s Network, Women of Color United, Latino Commission on AIDS, The National Association of People With AIDS, and HIV Law Project, among other community partners. Participants may join at any time, as often as they wish, and can join in and add to previous discussions.

A gifted doctor and natural conciliator, she devoted her professional life to the service of others, first as a social worker and then as an Internal Medicine physician. For the last 18 years, she served as the medical co-director of the East Bay AIDS Center (EBAC) at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, where she was also on the medical staff.

Claire was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the middle of five daughters of Jean and the late Sidney Borkert. She obtained her undergraduate degree at Memphis State University and her Masters in Social Work from University of Louisville, and then spent her early career as a social worker in Tennessee and Arizona. She also lived in San Diego and San Francisco before returning to Memphis, where she completed her medical degree at the University of Tennessee in 1988. Claire did medical rotations in Tennessee, Mississippi and Alaska before completing her residency at Highland General Hospital in Oakland, California. She subsequently worked at the Over 60 and the Native American Health Centers, and Kaiser and Highland Hospitals before joining EBAC.

Claire helped develop and obtain funding for programs to advance HIV care, and actively participated in international AIDS conferences and research forums. She started and ran EBAC’s Women’s HIV Program, which serves the largest group of women living with HIV in California. She served on the Board of Directors of the Family Care Network (a care consortium for women and youth affected by HIV) and Women Organized to Respond to Life-Threatening Diseases (WORLD). She was an avid dancer, sailor, kayaker, hiker, and craftsperson who made glass and wirework jewelry. Claire was known to her many friends, relatives, and patients as exceptionally warm and generous. She is survived by her beloved husband Larry Miller; her mother, who lives at Trezevant Manor, Memphis, TN; and four sisters, Carol Watkins, Pat Cox, and Ellen Hornyak of Memphis, TN, and Jane Hinson of Lexington, TN. A memorial celebration of Claire’s life is planned in San Francisco later this summer.

The family has requested that in Claire’s memory donations may be sent to WORLD or KIVA at in San Francisco, a non-profit organization that facilitates lending to the poor.
