The GET REAL program is a SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Services Administration) funded initiative to address substance use and co-occurring mental illnesses. GET REAL encourages clients to Get Recovery Empowerment And Life, by confronting their issues concerning substance abuse. This program is designed to provide outpatient substance use counseling and support. GET REAL utilizes motivational interviewing and harm reduction principles so clients do not have to be abstinent before enrolling in the program. This program utilizes support groups, one-on-one counseling, recovery support, and life skills education in order to support clients in achieving and maintaining long-term sobriety. In addition to substance use support, all GET REAL clients will receive HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C screening at regular intervals while in the program. Anyone who tests positive will receive needed treatment and support.
The GET REAL program is a collaboration between the following agencies: APEB (AIDS Project of the East Bay), WORLD (Women Organized to Respond to Life-threatening Diseases) and the Latino Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Our populations of focus are African American Young MSM (18 to 29 years old), African American MSM (30 years and older) and African American women (18 years and over). GET REAL outreach will focus on the City of Oakland and GET REAL enrollment will include individuals residing throughout Alameda County.
